OUR HISTORY
Villa Teag Children's Home was established to provide opportunities for children in need of care and protection. Our mission is to offer each child access to shelter, education, psychological support, life skills, and healthcare, enabling them to reach their full potential and grow into responsible adults.
The Home was founded by the late Hon. Mellitus Mugabe Were, the former Member of Parliament for Embakasi Constituency, alongside ten dedicated community members. In the early 2000s, Dandora—a neighborhood within Embakasi—faced significant challenges due to high adult mortality rates caused by HIV/AIDS and crime. This crisis led to an increase in abandoned and street children, prompting the establishment of Villa Teag Children's Home to address their urgent needs.
Hon. Mugabe Were was deeply committed to improving the lives of marginalized communities. He successfully secured a donor who sponsored 102 children, providing essential resources such as a five-story building, kitchen facilities, educational supplies, school fees, and recreational amenities. Tragically, in January 2008, Hon. Mugabe Were was assassinated outside his home in Nairobi.
In the face of this profound loss, the Villa Teag community demonstrated remarkable resilience and unity. Zaria Omwayi, a former employee, stepped forward as Director and sought assistance to sustain the Home's operations. A generous benefactor provided a four-bedroom house rent-free for three years, with a subsequent monthly rent of Kshs. 10,000. This support allowed Villa Teag to continue offering children their fundamental rights to quality life, survival, development, protection, and participation, including shelter, nutrition, clothing, education, recreation, and healthcare.
At Villa Teag, we strive to ensure that the best interests of the child guide our decisions, actively involving the children in our processes. We remain committed to our mission, adapting to challenges, and continually seeking support to provide a nurturing environment for the children in our care.
